Rehabilitation of the labyrinth
EUROPANDOM Guadeloupe, 1. Prize - International competition for young architects 1999

In a society where the representation of the world is expressed highly on a symbolic level, in which protective rites and landscape is integrated in an everyday life, collective housing of the 60’s has failed. Funny enough, the housing form which represents the Guadeloupe society best should be better demolished. But the quality and the structures of the insalubrious housing may give an answer to the question of the urban planning of Guadeloupe. They still contain many aspects of the rural environment of the Guadeloupe society.

The idea of the rehabilitation of the labyrinth helps us to deal with the existing structures and also to emphasise their qualities.

By taking the existing qualities into account, we propose to insert e.g. new neighbourhood units in a sensitive way between the existing ones. The common idea of our different interventions is to be able to develop the strip along the former RN 5 step by step, in several phases. With the implantation of different ‚generators‘ we start the process of a continuous restructuring of the urban fabric, based on certain spatial and social rules.
